Ramadan 2022

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world practice Ramadan; during this month, Muslims fast from the azaan of the Fajr prayer and open their fast at the azaan of the Maghrib prayer. The length of the month varies from 29 days to 30 days.

During Ramadan, all Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for the entire month. It is obligatory for Muslims that have reached puberty to fast throughout the month of Ramadan if they are healthy, while children can fast as they wish.

When does Ramadan 2022 Start?

The system for dates, months, and years in Islam is based on the4 lunar cycles. The announcement of Ramadan occurs through a lunar sighting in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The lunar cycle usually lasts for 30 days; however, sometimes, it lasts only 29 days. For Ramadan 2022, the start date is 3rd April 2022. Parts of Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is divided into three parts by a Hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Each part is called an Ashraa.

The first Ashraa: It is called Rehmaah. Rehmaah means mercy; during this period, Muslims pray diligently five times a day. They also offer Taraweeh prayers; these prayers are unique as the entire Quran is recited in them in sections. The Muslims ask for Allah’s mercy during this ashraa.

The second Ashraa: It is called Maghfiraah. Maghfiraah means Forgiveness; during this period, the Muslims focus on making sure that they are praying five times a day and diligently praying Taraweeh. They also make dua for forgiveness, and it is said to be a beautiful and accepting time to make dua.

The third Ashraa: It is called Nijaat. Nijaat means Protection; during this ahsraa, the Muslims pray and make dua to ask for protection from the horrors of Jahunnum, also known as hell.

Five Blessed/ Important Nights

These Ashraa lead up to the five most essential nights for Muslims in the Islamic calendar. The name given to these nights is Lailat-ul-qadr. It is also called The Night of Power. It is the day the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H).

The exact date of Lailat-Ul-Qadr is unknown; there are five nights, out of which one is said to be the actual occurrence. The duration for the night of power is the same as any other night, but Muslims sacrifice their sleep to pray and make dua. On this Holy night, one good deed gets a thousand blessings. The beauty and power of this night are perhaps some of the most incredible things that Allah has gifted the Muslim Ummah with.

Difference In Time

With the change in the lunar cycle’s duration, the times for opening and closing the fast also change. The time for closing the fast becomes smaller day by day, while the time for opening the fast increases day by day. This is why Ramadan occurs every year earlier, and the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycles. It is different from the Gregorian calendar in many ways; one of them is the basis of lunar cycles rather than solar cycles.

Eid Celebrations

There are two Eid celebrations that happen in one Islamic year. Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Adha, are celebrated globally. At the end of the month of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims throughout the globe.  Eid-ul-Fitr is also known as the feast of breaking the fast. Muslims celebrate by praying and listening to the Eid-ul-Fitr sermon. They make food and give it to other people to enjoy and celebrate.
