Every year on July 11th, the world observes World Population Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges and opportunities associated with global population growth.
At Ek Plate Biryani (EPB), providing food security for Pakistanis in need is at the heart of our mission. This year, we want to explore the critical link between population growth and food security, particularly in the context of Pakistan.
A World of Plenty, Unevenly Distributed:
Our planet has the potential to sustain a healthy population, but the distribution of resources is far from equal. While some regions grapple with food insecurity, others struggle with overconsumption.
This imbalance is exacerbated by factors like:
Population Growth
The global population continues to rise, putting a strain on already limited resources like water, arable land, and food production capacity.
Climate Change

Extreme weather events like droughts and floods disrupt agricultural production, further jeopardizing food security.
Inequality
Unequal access to resources and income disparity leave many struggling to afford nutritious food, even when it is available.
The Pakistani Context: A Population Boom and its Challenges
Pakistan, with a population exceeding 220 million, faces a unique set of challenges related to population growth and food security. Here’s a closer look:
A Growing Demand for Resources
As the population increases, so does the demand for food. However, Pakistan’s agricultural land remains relatively constant, creating a strain on food production. While the production is the same, the population gradient is going steep.
The Child Labor Conundrum

In some families struggling to meet basic needs, children are forced into labor to contribute to household income. This not only hinders their education and prospects but also perpetuates the cycle of poverty and food insecurity.
Price Fluctuations and the Vulnerable
Food price hikes often accompany supply shortages due to inadequate production or natural disasters. This disproportionately affects the poorest segments of society, who can no longer afford necessities.
A Ripple Effect: Beyond Hunger Pangs
The consequences of food insecurity are far-reaching. It can lead to:
Malnutrition

A lack of access to essential nutrients can lead to stunted growth, impaired cognitive development, and increased susceptibility to diseases. In Pakistan, a concerning number of young children face malnutrition challenges.
Nearly half (40%) experience stunting, hindering their growth and development. Additionally, 17.7% suffer from wasting, a critical condition requiring immediate attention.
Health Issues
Food insecurity is linked to a higher prevalence of various health problems, further straining an already overburdened healthcare system.
With an estimated 0.64 beds per 1,000 inhabitants in 2024, access to inpatient care appears limited. This means there might be fewer available beds for those who need hospitalization.
Social Unrest
Pakistan’s projected economic growth of 1.8% for the current fiscal year ending June 2024 paints a picture of a slow and sluggish economic climate. When basic needs like food are not met, it can lead to frustration, social unrest, and political instability.
Fighting Hunger, One Plate at a Time: The EPB Approach
At Ek Plate Biryani, we recognize the gravity of food insecurity in Pakistan. While we may not be able to single-handedly solve the complex challenges associated with population growth, we strive to make a difference:
Targeted Food Distribution

We focus on providing nutritious meals to the most vulnerable populations, like families with young children and the elderly.
Community Collaboration
We work alongside other NGOs and local communities to identify areas of greatest need and ensure that our resources reach those who need them most.
Raising Awareness
We use our platform to educate the public about food security challenges and advocate for policies that promote sustainable agriculture and resource management.
World Population Day: A Call to a Shared Responsibility
World Population Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure a sustainable future for all. Here’s what we can do:
Supporting Organisations Like EPB

Your contributions allow us to continue providing essential food assistance to those in need. Donate if you can, and spread the word about our mission.
Individual Choices
Making conscious choices about our food consumption can make a difference. Reduce food waste, support local farmers’ markets, and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
Advocating for Change
Urge your government representatives to prioritize food security initiatives and implement policies that promote sustainable agriculture and resource management.
A Brighter Future is Possible

The challenges of population growth and food security are complex, but they are not insurmountable. By working together as individuals, organizations, and governments, we can create a future where everyone has access to safe and nutritious food.
At Ek Plate Biryani, we believe that even a single plate of biryani can offer a ray of hope and contribute to a more secure and just food future for all Pakistanis. Join us in this fight – together, we can make a difference.
